Astro Avenger continues the trend of classic gaming made popular through Nintendo and Sega classics like R-type and Gladius.

Despite its age, this genre has proved to be a strong favourite among game makers and players alike.

Astro Avenger goes beyond the norm in its presentation. An excellent sound track accompanies the game, and 3D polygons take the place of the usual 2D sprites. Hit point bars above the enemy ships are also a nice touch.

A lot of effort has also been made to beef up the game play. Money can be collected from enemy ships used to purchase ship upgrades. There are five different weapons to choose from and, once bought, these can be selected at any time.

As the stronger weapons use more ammo than the weaker ones, deciding which to use adds an element of strategy.

There is also a selection of missiles which can be launched from your ship. Deciding when to fire your nuclear bomb can mean the difference between peace in the universe and an abrupt game over.

However, the endless destruction of enemy ships and gun turrets does get repetitive after a while, and sometimes so many enemies will flood the screen that it seems impossible not to get hit.
