We’re always seeking to find tools that enhances our productivity. These could include installing a virtual desktop manager that enables you to open an application on your primary desktop and then another, full-screen, across another. You’d use a keyboard combination to quickly switch between desktops.
However, you still have to remember and use this key combo, so there must be a better way of making use of the workspace available on desktop, without having to run multiple desktops?
WindowTabs is a new tool that will add a tab to the top of open applications and perform a little like the Firefox tabbed system. However, it’s different in the respect that you can have multiple versions of the same application within each tabbed window. For example, you could have multiple copies of Microsoft Outlook running, in a tabbed window system, that presented you with your email, your calendar and so on.
You’re not restricted by keeping the same applications within your tabbed system. You could drag Microsoft Outlook to Mozilla Firefox and have both applications open within the same window, separated by tabs. This would save real-estate and enable you to quickly move between the two applications. It can get a tad confusing though. If you iconify the open window to your TaskBar, it will iconify as the primary application, so when you go and find Outlook, you can only see Firefox in the TaskBar, forgetting that Outlook is sharing the same application window.
WindowTabs enables you to quickly swap tabs around, move them back out as standalone applications and will stop some applications from presenting you with a tabbed system – you wouldn’t want your Firefox downloads window to include tabs. Some apps don’t like the tabbed system either. Directory Opus is a good example.
Note that WindowTabs is shareware and the free version will only open three tabs.
