We love to keep in touch. Quite frankly, it confuses me. Back in the 80s we would pick up the phone and call a friend, now and again, or pop down the pub with our friends to discuss the latest news. These days people can’t switch off from finding the latest news, info and social gossip from our friends. Whether it’s through a forum, messenger or Facebook, we don’t like to miss out.
Twitter is the latest way of keeping in touch. It enables people to follow other users and drop one-sentence answers to quick questions about what they are doing, thinking of or suggestions regarding a particular topic. Need to know of a decent hotel in a particular town? Ask your Twitter followers for their suggestions.
Snag is, we don’t want to install other applications to follow the latest news, RSS feeds and Twitter conversations. We’d prefer to do this within our web browser, but without having to navigate from our current web page.
Snowl is the latest Firefox add-on from the Mozilla Labs. It splits your browser in to various sections, so you can see the headers in a list down the left hand side of the web browser, the news stories at the top and your standard web page in the centre of the browser.
This version of Snowl is still an early preview and will only support RSS news feeds and Twitter. Subsequent versions will have support for Facebook, AIM, Google Talk as well as having two-way live conversations.
