If you need to find an object, you may try your favourite online retailer. More likely, you’ll go straight to Google and perform a search. However, those sites ranked at the top of your search results may not always be the most appropriate retailer for your intended purchase. Check the feedback on their site (if it exists) and you may only seen positive reviews.

For this reason, it’s best to turn to an independent review. McAfee SiteAdvisor was the first website analysis tool that enabled users to give an opinion on a particular site. However, this SiteAdvisor plugin for Firefox and Internet Explorer was aimed at security. It attempts to stop you from landing on a fake website, a site that will attempt to extract your personal information for their gain or other rogue destination. The Norton Safe Web is a similar add-on for your browser.

Trustpilot works along the same lines. It will display a red cross, amber exclamation mark or green tick if the site can be trusted. However, the trust isn’t always security-orientated. It’s based around the user experience. Has the site done what it says it will do? Has it delivered on time, for example? Trustpilot attempts to secure user reviews from all over the Internet, including ciao.com, pricecomparison.com, resellerratings.com as well as its own user-ratings.

There’s no reason why you couldn’t combine, say, Trustpilot and McAfee SiteAdvisor for maximum security when you intend to visit (or are browsing) a new website.
