Verdict: A great antivirus and antispyware program at no cost

We're usually wary of programs that have a name ending with "Express". It
often means the good features have been surgically removed, leaving you with an
unsatisfying and inadequate shell. But in this case we couldn't have been more
wrong. The VCOM Fix-It Utilities 7 Express is absolutely crammed with PC
maintenance functionality, and includes many features that are a step above the
equivalents in similar packages.
The Diagnose section includes some comprehensive hardware tests, for
instance, helping you detect issues that can cause all kinds of Windows
instabilities.
There's a Fix & Maintain section, with the usual module that will scan
for and remove errors in the Windows Registry. But you also get a neat RegEdit
replacement, with handy extras like Bookmarks and a toolbar. There are tools to
find and fix disk problems, and a sync module to properly synchronize your
system clock. (Don't laugh: a clock that's substantially out can cause odd
Windows and application problems in itself.)
The Optimize section includes StartupCommander, a powerful tool for
controlling your startup programs. And the program can also quickly clear up and
defragment your Registry, or entire hard drive, for a little extra speed boost.
Best of all is the Recovery section, which provides several ways to help you
recover from disaster. A checkpoint system backs up system data, for instance,
something like a more powerful system restore. The File Undeleter restores
deleted files, but uses snapshots of your file system for more accurate results.
The Rescue Disk is a bootable CD that fixes partition problems and can get your
PC booting again. And just in case a Fix-It tweak goes wrong, UndoIt will
reverse the change and restore normal working order.
