SlySoft introduces annual subscription for Blu-ray cracking software
If you want to turn your PC into a region-free DVD/Blu-ray player, with the ability to rip movies to the hard drive, Adam Turner says now is the time to act.
If you're looking to build the mother of all media centres, I'd say SlySoft's AnyDVD software is essential. If you've got a Blu-ray or HD DVD drive in the mix, AnyDVD HD is the way to go. There's even a 21 day free trial so you can put it through its paces.
AnyDVD explained
AnyDVD strips away region-coding so you can buy cheaper movies from overseas. It also strips away the DRM from movies, including High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection. This means you can watch Blu-ray or HD DVD movies even if your graphics card or monitor isn't HDCP-compatible. It also allows you to easily rip movies to the hard drive, so you can use your PC as a video jukebox while the original discs are safely tucked away in the cupboard.
Cat and mouse over Blu-Ray DRM
SlySoft has been at the forefront of the cat and mouse game with the movie industry over Digital Rights Management. The software isn't cheap, with the falling Aussie dollar pushing the price up over $AU100.
SlySoft ensures you get plenty of bang for your buck, releasing a new version of AnyDVD HD every few weeks to keep pace with changes to the DRM on Blu-ray discs. Until now a one-off fee entitled you to a lifetime of free updates but, as of January 1, SlySoft is introducing an annual subscription fee for new customers.
If you're an existing SlySoft customer nothing will change, but if you've been thinking about checking out AnyDVD for the first time, now is the time to act. To sweeten the deal, SlySoft is even offering a 20 per cent discount on all software until Dec 31 - letting you pick up AnyDVD cheap and still be entitled to free lifetime upgrades rather than the annual subscription.
While it's a shame SlySoft needs to introduce an annual subscription, you have to applaud them for honouring the free upgrade pledge to existing customers and giving new customers plenty of warning about the upcoming changes. It's worth checking out the free trial now to see if you want to buy your PC an early Christmas present.

Great program but almost as fast as Slysoft updates ANYDVD someone else is cracking it so you do not have to pay for it. How can you feel guilty using a crack for a program that cracks other programs? |

I wonder if SlySoft would be willing to cover your court costs should you fall foul of the movie moguls legal bloodhounds? (Don't think it couldn't happen. I remember one unfortunate teenager with a large mp3 collection...) |
