FFS, WTF was SanDisk thinking?
SanDisk has released ExtremeFFS technology, boosting flash card write speeds whilst proving that marketing people know Sweet FA about internet slang.
This week's press release from SanDisk produced a collective LOL amongst Australia's IT journalists, amused by the fact that whoever named the product obviously has NFI what FFS stands for. One would assume it refers to the Flash File System used with flash memory, but most people would be more familiar with Urban Dictionary's definition of this popular TLA.
ExtremeFFS is a "next-generation patented flash management system – which has the potential to accelerate random write speeds by up to 100 times over existing systems" according to SanDisk's gushing press release, which averaged around four acronyms per paragraph. It's just a shame whoever named the product didn't bother to Google "FFS".
It could all be a clever marketing ploy by the evil geniuses at SanDisk. We all wet ourselves laughing when Nintendo named its new games console the Wii, but it was actually a clever marketing ploy. Many of us took the piss out of the Wii, but the name got it a hell of a lot of press coverage.
Maybe the choice of FFS wasn't a SNAFU by SanDisk, but a cunning plan to get people talking about it. Hey, I guess it worked. I wrote this blog post, although it's hard to type when I'm ROTFLMFAO.
IMHO, SanDisk's ExtremeFFS technology is the funniest thing since Red Dwarf's Rimmer founded the Committee for the Liberation and Integration of Terrifying Organisms and their Rehabilitation Into Society. I'll leave you to think about that, some people might find it hard to find.
