With only four major brands on the
market for hard disks, you’d expect
competition to be fierce. It might seem
surprising that Samsung was a clear
winner, but our A-list results for the
past three years have given Samsung a
solid lead that they’ve yet to relinquish.
Even so, Samsung’s quietness and value
for money were far ahead of their
competitors – 1139 of Samsung’s 2150
customers were very satisfied with
quietness, and 1347 with value for
money. 93% of Samsung’s hard disk
cutomers would opt for another from
the same brand, compared to 96% for
Samsung and Western Digital, and 90%
for Mastor and Hitachi.
The only place where Samsung
conceded some ground was in
reliability, but all four major
manufacturers were clustered around
the average – it’s likely that drive
failures are few enough in number
that it’s not a major factor for most
purchasers. Certainly data from Google
– which purchases large volumes of
off-the-shelf consumer drives for its
storage needs – suggests that failures
are relatively few.
