The delay of any major game release is often met with a mild degree of gnashing of teeth and the rending of garments, but more often than not we gamers are an understanding lot, and know that sometimes, developers just need more time. Not so the frothing commenters on Rockstar Games' GTA V release date announcement, who are doing their level best to paint an alarming picture that could easily be name 'Portrait of a gamer as entitled jerk'.
From 14 year old kids flailing about in cursing angst over the delay, quite ignorant of the fact they legally shouldn't be playing it, to people literally threatening violent, bloody revenge, it's the kind of thing that must make Rockstar developers blush.
In fact, so great has been the response that Rockstar's tried to calm the storming masses. "To those of you saying or seeing various conspiracy theories about there being some other ulterior motive for this delay, rest assured that they’re all nonsense – literally the only reason we’ve delayed the release is because we want the game to be as good as it needs to be."
Makes sense to us, but check out some of the epic gamer rage taking place.
wolfbackGames is disappoint:
"I guess I'll be taking down my GTA5 Spring 2013 poster.. it's new home will be the trash."
sonkaya98's feels are intense:
"DONT BELİEVE TO R* WHEN THE 9.17.2013 WİLL COME THEY WİLL DELAY THE GAME AGAİN TO 2014 AND EARLY 2014 TGE NEXT GEN CONSOLS WİLL RELEASE BUT THE GAME WİLL RELEASE TO THE OLD CONSOLS XBOX 360 and PS3."
Urbancutty is obviously an old hand at game development:
"Rockstar, maybe people even with common sense wouldn't get the feeling of mistrust and dishonesty when you continue to blatantly lie about release dates. First it was said it would definitely be released in fiscal year 2013, next it was spring 2013, now September? This game has been finished I'm sure and this is simply a marketing tactic"
Dan-V-Rockstar is invoking a higher power:
"...without prior warning they got our hopes up well after they knew there was gonna be a heavy delay i only hope God is watching and what goes around truly comes back around..."
RusskyDanger just wants people to be heard:
"R* please stop DELETING fair comments, you screwed up and we are angry and we do not buy your excuses and LACK OF TASTE for LYING on the BOX ART release."
And, of course, this is one of the comments removed by Rockstar's mods:
"DO YOU GUYS NOT REALIZE PEOPLE F**KING DIE EVERYDAY AND I HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS GAME FOR FIVE F**CKING YEARS I COULD DIE BEFORE THIS GAME COMES OUT IN SEPTEMBER SO DONT DELAY JUST BRING GAME OUT IN SPRING THEN JUST EVERY WEEK DO A UPDATE F**K SAKE I MIGHT JUST KILL ALOT OF PEOPLE TONIGHT F**K IT I GOING TO KILL MY... " and so on and so forth. I'm getting dimmer just typing it out.
There's a common maxim among many netizens and writers, that one should 'never read the comments'. There's just something about the ability to immediately and anonymously respond to something that all too often brings out the worst in people. There are, of course, reasonable comments in amongst the sturm and drang, but the radically over the top rants have so much more weight.
The game's coming - just be happy about that!
