Evidence mounts for iPhone 5’s larger screen

iOS 6’s home screen can be scaled to 640 x 1136 screen, with four rows of icons becoming five

It’s long been rumoured that the iPhone 5 would have a larger screen than previous models. All current iPhones have a 3.5-inch display, but the upcoming iPhone is believed to have a longer screen closer to 4 inches in size.

9to5Mac has found some compelling evidence to back up that theory, thanks to the iOS simulator application included with the iOS software development kit. This kit is used to test prospective apps on different versions of the iOS platform, and 9to5Mac managed to tweak the settings to see what happened when the simulator was running on the upcoming iPhone’s rumoured 640 x 1136 screen.

The results are highly interesting. In iOS 5.1 simulation, the home screen stretched to show four rows of icons, with unsightly gaps in between; but in iOS 6 simulation mode, the screen stretched AND added a fifth row of icons, all perfectly spaced. That strongly suggests that we’ll be seeing a larger screen with a 640 x 1136 Retina Display resolution – and five rows of icons on the home screen, natch.
