Apple ships 17 million iPads in the past three months

Cupertino averaging 5.7 million iPads a month from April to June.

After we reported that Samsung had shipped 10 million units of its Galaxy SIII phone, it seemed only reasonable to put that number in a little perspective, Apple-style

Apple's recent earnings report revealed that it has sold 17 million iPads just between April and June. That averages out to a around 5.7 million iPads shipped each months, which is an 84 per cent increase from the same time last year.

Although numbers and percentages can sometimes be fairly obfuscatory, few would deny that this is an impressive result for Apple and proof of its impressive dominance of the tablet space. We will be watching this space very carefully to see how "budget" tablet such as the Nexus 7 and the upcoming Surface offerings from Microsoft will impact on Cupertino - if they do at all.

Get ready - the tablet market is about to become fascinating.
