Last night, Intel Australia showcased its new range of 22nm Core processors at Sydney's Overseas Passenger Terminal in Circular Quay, following the launch of the high-end Core i7 desktop Ivy Bridge chip earlier this year.
The event was studded with Ivy Bridge-powered hardware from the likes of Dell, Lenovo, HP, Acer, Asus, Samsung, Sony and many more. In all, there were over 40 new products on display, including Ultrabooks such as the Samsung Series 9 (now with Ivy Bridge), HP Envy 4 Pro and Toshiba Satellite U840W.
Guests also got to play with a range of Ivy Bridge desktops, ranging from mammoth Alienware gaming rigs to miniature PCs like the Lenovo ThinkCentre M92p.
Kate Burleigh, General Manager Intel Australia & New Zealand, gave an overview of the new Core processor range and Tri-Gate transistor technology. “Today… Ultrabooks and 22nm processors are launching together, with Intel able to bring, in just under a year, 3rd-gen processor tech to the market," Burleigh stated.
The presentation had a strong mobility focus, with Burleigh highlighting the advantages Ivy Bridge brings to the Ultrabook platform, which she claimed would become "second nature" to consumers “in a matter of months".

In addition to faster speeds, Burleigh stated that responsiveness, style, security and mobility (especially in the home) were the key drivers for Intel's latest platform, based on customer feedback. "It’s no point doing this if consumers don’t want the product," Burleigh explained. “...Consumers who are looking for the best experience don’t care what tri-gate is, they want to know how the tech will benefit them”.
Burleigh announced that over 35 new Ultrabooks powered by Intel's 22nm technology will have launched globally from today (6/06/12). More than 110 designs are expected in the next year.
In terms of nomenclature, the Ivy Bridge family will retain the same Core i3, Core i5 and Core i7 badge as their predecessors, although individual model numbers will now begin with a “3” (to denote their third generation status).
