Google Maps for Ancient Rome lets you budget 2000 year-old roadtrips

Google Maps for Ancient Rome lets you budget 2000 year-old roadtrips

Planning a weekend trip to Constantinopolis from Roma by horseback? Here's all you'll need to know.

Roman history professor Walter Scheidel from Stanford has founded Orbis - a Google Maps-like tool which is able to calculate the routes and costs of journeys covering 10 million square kilometres with over 750 destinations – in Ancient Rome.

Whether you're travelling by horseback or by boat, Orbis lets you calculate the fastest or cheapest route in denarii (for wanderers on a budget). It was inspired by a London Underground app which shows the travel time in between stations.

Whether you're a curious history fanatic or a dedicated live-action historical roleplayer, check out Orbis for yourself and give it a spin here.
