Roman history professor Walter Scheidel from Stanford has founded Orbis - a Google Maps-like tool which is able to calculate the routes and costs of journeys covering 10 million square kilometres with over 750 destinations – in Ancient Rome.
Whether you're travelling by horseback or by boat, Orbis lets you calculate the fastest or cheapest route in denarii (for wanderers on a budget). It was inspired by a London Underground app which shows the travel time in between stations.
