First impressions: Samsung Galaxy S3 vs HTC One X

First impressions: Samsung Galaxy S3 vs HTC One X

Can the two most spec heavy Android handsets have it out, or are they perfectly matched?

Samsung Galaxy S3 vs HTC One X – power

Both handsets come packing a quad-core. The HTC One X has the 1.5GHz Tegra 3, meaning a fifth low-power core to save battery. The Galaxy S3 has its very own 1.4GHz Exynos processor that, according to some leaked benchmarking tests, blows the Tegra 3 out of the water. But with Tegra 3 specific games and a proven track record for speed, the jury’s still out on which of these is faster. Either way they’ll keep up with whatever you throw at them with plenty of power left.

Samsung Galaxy S3 vs HTC One X – screen

Both have 1280x720p resolution screens. But while the One X has a Super LCD2 at 4.7in, the S3 has a superior 4.8in Super AMOLED showing just how knowledgeable Samsung is in this field. Not only is the bigger screen packed into a nearly-as-small body, but it’s also (according to Samsung) more energy efficient. We haven’t had a great deal of time with it but on first impressions the S3 screen is hands-down the best we’ve ever seen on a mobile device. And with the option to hover a video window over whatever you're doing, the S3 takes advantage of that screen better too.

Samsung Galaxy S3 vs HTC One X – camera

Both pack in 8MP and 1080p camera skills, and both offer a burst, and an auto best selection mode. But it’s the One X that has a dedicated imaging chip and a light guzzling f/2.0 aperture 28mm lens, while the S3 lens spec is still unknown. But, while lacking in spec specifics, the S3 does offer software advantages like Buddy Photo that automatically recognises and tags your friends in pictures for one touch easy sharing. On top of that its front facing camera is a 1.9MP, 720p brainiac that knows when you’re looking at the screen and keeps it awake for you. So while the One X may have a better snapper (unconfirmed as yet), the S3 is packing more features.

Samsung Galaxy S3 vs HTC One X – extras and verdict

While the HTC One X is an amazing phone with great camera, screen and chip, plus 25GB Dropbox storage – the S3 goes a bit further. The new Galaxy has a larger battery at 2,100mAh (over 1,800mAh), NFC, an eye-tracking camera that could have some amazing uses when apps start fiddling with it, and that larger Super AMOLED screen. Although the HTC Sense 4.0 skin may offer a slightly better UI on Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, and the One X is packing Beats Audio – the hyperglazed Galaxy S3 is the better all round smartphone.
