Five tablets more exciting than the iPad 3

Five tablets more exciting than the iPad 3

Disappointed by the new iPad? Wanted something more "magical" and less "resolutionary"? Cheer yourself up with these five tablets that are truly innovative.

Got a bad case of the Apple Launch blues? Found yourself staring dejectedly at your computer monitor, while wearing a commemorative black turtleneck and wondering, once more, “is that it? Where’s all the magic I was promised?”

Well put down the emergency work scotch and get a smile back on your face – here are five exciting tablets that may just bring a little sunshine back into your life.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 4G

The new iPad is 4G right? Well yes, but it runs it’s LTE on the 700Mhz and 2100MHz frequencies and the only 4G networking currently in Australia is Telstra’s, which runs on 1800Mhz. What’s that mean? It means that the new iPad won’t be hooking into a 4G network in Australia any time soon.

Luckily, we already have a 4G tablet you can go and buy right now. Samsung’s Galaxy Tab 8.9 4G has a 1.5Ghz dual core processor, weighs only 470g and works on Telstra 4G. The 32GB model runs to $840 – slightly more than the equivalent 4G iPad, but this one does have the advantage of working.

Asus Padphone

Asus Padfone

Part phone, part tablet, all awesome. The Asus Padfone neatly answers the problem many people have – namely “why do I have to carry two devices that do really similar things”.

The Padfone is a 4.3in phone sporting a beautiful qHD AMOLED screen, dual core 1.5GHz processor and running Android 4. Pop it into the dock though, and it’s a 10.1in tablet with 1280x800 resolution, microUSB and HDMI ports, amazing battery life and even a stylus. Oh and then that can dock into a keyboard. So it’s basically doing the work of three devices.

Asus Transformer Prime

The best Android tablet around? We certainly thought so back in issue 172. The quad core Tegra 3 powered tablet part is fast, slick and has an stunning IPS screen that’s vibrant and bright. Plug it into the keyboard dock and you can get over 18hours of battery life. The price is great too - $799 for the 16GB version, which includes the dock. See it in more detail here.

Huawei MediaPad 10

It’s Huawei or the highway as the Chinese powerhouse goes from strength to strength. The MediaPad 10 joins the ranks of quad-core tablets with Huawei’s own 1.5GHz K3 processor. The screen is a 1920x1200 IPS display, the camera is 8MP and best of all, this is all tucked into a tiny little frame. In fact the MediaPad 10 is just 8.8mm thin and 600g.

Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1

The Galaxy Tab 10.1 was the tablet Apple were so afraid of they went to court to try and have sales of it banned. The Note 10.1 has all of the power of the Tab, with the stylus and groovy drawing ability of the Note smartphone. It can not only run two apps at the same time, you can even run two apps side-by-side. It’s also thinner, has an integrated IR port for remote controlling devices at home and microSD lets you expand your memory up to 32GB.

That Transformer is an innovative idea. Looks neat in the flesh and the KB is also the cover - a very tough cover. Like the TWO SD slots AND a HDMI port and the (combined) battery life ... Winner!

Why does this web site have to be so anti Apple and Apple products?

From viewing this site for over a year now, I have never seen a positive article about Apple or Apple products.

Is it some form of inferiority complex? Or maybe it's envy?

@ bolts25: Anti-apple you say? Gosh, what about today's story that says "Whatever you want to call it, the new iPad is a winner"?

I think PCAuthority just trying to give two sides of the story. Maybe it's inferiority complex, or envy, or maybe it is just the 'truth' that there are much better tablets that is more 'exciting' than "the new iPad"!

@bolts25 I fully agree with CuteChocobo, but on another note this is PC and Tech authority not Apple Mag, and Apple keeps telling everyone that its not PC and PC is the enemy so why should a Mag dedicated to PC and other cool gadgets be expected to talk up Apple???

@bolt25 ... check out the opinion article about the new ipad, it is very positive. largely I find it not Squeeing fanboy apple reporting so reasonably balanced.

On the actual topic at hand, I just got a Transformer Prime 32GB Wifi from JB HIFI for $710 for my wife. It's an awesome bit if kit that upgraded to ICS 4.0 as soon as I got it home. THe keyboard make it great for uni and being detachable its a versitile light tablet the rest of the time. Graphics are impressive for Tegra 3 optimised games to say the least.

Cant recommend it highly enough

PC means Personal Computer and Apple Macs are personal computers so Macs ARE PCs also!
I am getting the iPad3Gen mainly because of all the books and apps I have already purchased on my iPhone3GS. The tablet will make reading my books so much easier! But Apple does seems to make things harder for itself by trying to be control freaks when it comes to anything compatible outside of Apple products. I can see a time when non Apple tablets (as this article shows), will most probably over take Apple.
Something was different during this last Apple iPad release, did anyone else "feel" it? The 'wow' has gone and I feel that iPad3Gen is what iPad2 should have been.

The tide has turned.

If there is no 4g in your area, it will go directly to 3G and if there is no 3G it will switch to EDGE.

why is it that all of these discussion threads inlcude whinging apple fanboys? apple went to great lengths and spent a LOT of money in advertising to distinguish itself from the personal computer (PC) tag.
SO back to the OP my vote is for the smaller samsung tab, as for the whinging... Take it elsewhere please

Actually it was IBM that highjacked the term PC for its range of Personal Computers. Not the other way around.

This forum includes the full quorum of whinging Apple, PC, Android, Linux etc users, and those who haven't a clue what their computer is but think it is "Word".

@bolts25 - How are they anti-Apple? They're pointing out the alternatives to the iPad. Unlike some magazines out there that say "Apple are the greatest thing to ever happen to this Earth. They can do no wrong" PC&TA actually are fair and balanced.
