Comics get their own section in Apple's iBookstore

Watch out Comixology – Apple has a marvel of an idea for owning the comics market.

Apple's added a standalone comic book section to its iBookstore, adding a bit of geek chic credibility to its online library.

The iBookstore's already sporting a selection of 80 Marvel titles, with Image's The Walking Dead another one of the hits being shown off. It’s surely only a matter of time before all the comic publishing giants have their titles sitting snug on an iBookstore shelf – we can only hope the truly creative smaller titles don’t get left behind.

So is this good or bad news? More competition can only serve to drive comic prices further down, which is good news for consumers – bad if you own a comic book shop, though.

Some will always prefer and pay for a physical book etc.
Having 'sections' in libraries is as old as printed works are.

Agreed, Photo.

i have been collecting comic books for over 22 years now, & i'm not close to stopping. i buy most of mine from the comic store, as physical books, but i have recently started getting digital ones as well, from Comixology (more so since Marvel joined them) & i find myself drawn to the convenience, the (lack of) space they take up, & the price - sometimes upwards of $5.00 cheaper than 'cover price' in the store (something of stark importance to me, as i live in Australia, so 'cover price' here is a joke compared to America).

But there is still a little part of me that likes the feel of the comic in my hand, the smell of the paper, carefully packaging the book in a bag with a backing board, etc.

i have absolutely no doubt that i will move more and more to digital over the coming years, but as Picard still has a copy of the Collected Works of Shakespeare in a glass cabinet in his ready room, i too will still cherish my copies of Avengers Annual #10 & Uncanny X-Men #158.
