Google looking at voice-controlled Android lock screens?

Are gesture and voice-controlled lock screens on their way to Android machines?

Smartphone manufacturers have already been treading on eggshells to avoid infringing on Apple's lock screen patents. Now that Apple has been granted the right to ban Motorola from copying its slide to unlock feature, lock screen patents are an even bigger thorn in manufacturers' side.

However, Patently Apple is showing off a number of lock screens apparently patented by Google that manage to steer clear of Apple's patents, while providing screen lock options that remain simple and fully-functional.

With a multitude of unlock methods to develop, it looks like Google has a choice as to what will wind up on its range of Android devices.

One option is the circular lock screen, not too dissimilar to what can be found on Ice Cream Sandwich – with multiple shortcuts with drag-to-open functionality.

Interestingly, the mention of voice input suggests Google may be working on a voice controlled screen unlock mechanism.

As you can see, another of Google's potential unlock systems is based around a bar at the top of the screen, containing icons that can be dragged down to in order to unlock them.

Hmm, I wonder how the already available programs like Widgetlocker and Speed launcher fit into this story?

So what happens with voice-controlled locking when you have laryngitis? Riddle me that, Batman!

You have the keyboard pass or gesture as laryngitis (or 'flu) backup, I understand.

The patents themselves are mostly BS no matter who they come from. In the case above it's 'necessary' to COMBAT BS patents. I hope breathing on a screen to cleane can't be patented ...

The whole thing is ridiculous.

Its funny, because I thought something was only patent-able if it is Novel (new), Useful and Nonobvious.

I would not consider a "Slide to Unlock" as Novel: It has been used for years in the of sliding physical switches to unlock and lock devices. It definitely is useful, and I would not consider it Nonobvious, after all, making a gesture to a piece of hardware is hardly rocket science in this day and age.

Its the Patent offices which need to be more strict here, I have had some experience with patents and I found out that its can be quite difficult to get these patents passed (not to mention expensive) but because of this, it seems that the companies with more money have much more opportunity to get these patents pending and passed. Since when should the protection of your own creation rely on you having the money to protect?

The idea of patents is a novel, useful and non-obvious idea, but unfortunately we have implemented it badly!

In Australia it is very INEXPENSIVE to protect your ideas via patent.

I have several and have no problems with getting an maintaining.

Swipe to unlock? - another retro-invented non-patent.

G A F - there are other ways of doing this. Maybe the froot loops will next try to patent the circular motion. It would be in character.

AM, what patents - good on you and just curious - PM if you like :)
