Can the iPhone 4S drive back the Android army in 2012?

As a phone platform, Android left the iPhone in the dust in Australia from July to September in Australia.

Android thumped the iPhone in Australian smartphone sales during July, August and September this year, notching up 49% of sales compared to Apple’s 36%. The Android surge was lead by arch-rival Samsung, which accounted for half of all Android smartphone sales, according to figures from IDC. The figure still puts Apple in front of Samsung alone, but Android as a whole left the iPhone in the dust.

Of course these figures are distorted by the fact that Android superphones such as the Samsung Galaxy S II and HTC Sensation were on the shelves in Q3, while the Apple faithful were still waiting for the iPhone 4S. Analysts say Apple has clawed back market share since the 4S hit the stores but, even with this boost, IDC still expects Android to narrowly outsell the iPhone in 2011.

 I've made the switch and don't think I will ever look back.
That said, I still think Apple are showing incredible figures and have a very strong market presence. To put this article into perspective look at the number of Android handsets (and their relatively low price) competing against 3 iPhone models being sold (at a higher price).
Trying to tell people to check out (not even buy!) Android's handsets have been very challenging for me personally, and I think it shows how strong the iPhone perception as a brand is in Australia.

 That's quite incredible, I never would've guessed that Android bet Apple or their iPhone in sales. If there is a so-called iPhone 5 appearing next year, then they've got a good chance of winning back some market share.

iPhones are designed for simplicity and ease of use, but whether that is more dominant than Android we'll soon find out..
Apple are very good at what they do, and they'll come up with something to win back some more sales, surely..

 Yep, when people first think they need a smart phone, iPhone immediately comes to mind to them. Either because of marketing or their friends have one. You've got to give it to Apple - good hardware and marketing.

I just took receipt of two new Galaxy S II handset yesterday, I'm upgrading from a HTC Desire (Low storage was driving me nuts), and my wife is upgrading from an iPhone.

Personally, I much prefer the hardware on the market from the different (competing) manufacturers with Android as the platform, and the freedom it gives with being able to load alternate keyboards and the like (i.e. Swype), without being locked in to iTunes.

Each to their own. When people ask me "what this Android thing is" I show them, and let them make up their own minds. A lot choose Android after a demo though.

 Android is just as simple as apple, don't let the fans convince it is in ANY way difficult to use.

That is dishonest.

True, Android OFFERS more ways of using it - but you don't HAVE to take advantage of everything!

Your choice, both are good quality etc...

 Frankly, I think the whole market share thing is a bit of a pissi.g contest.

Yes, Androd (all dozens of models etc) sells or gives away more than iOS, however reality is the two biggest single mfrs, Samsung and Apple are selling every top line phone they can make. There's no real winner or loser in that contest, just two outstanding performers with slightly different approaches to market.

They will both come out with new models next year that will likely see other competitors falling further behind.
