Dell has confirmed it will stop selling the Dell Inspiron Mini netbook, trading the form factor in for higher-end laptops.
Netbook sales have steadily declined, with analysts blaming the arrival of tablets for drawing away consumer spending.
A message on the Dell website says: "Our mini netbooks are no longer available. Shop the next best thing - the Inspiron 14R, a stylish and portable 14in laptop with switchable lids."
Dell said it sold out of the Mini, and was refocusing on higher-end laptops. "We sold through the Dell Mini some time ago," Matthew Hutchison, director of Dell Global Consumer PR, told CNet. "We're committed to the highly portable space and have focused on delivering thin and powerful solutions, for which we've seen strong success, particularly in our XPS line."
CEO Michael Dell said in a conference call for Dell's last results that the high-end XPS laptop line had posted 207% revenue growth, and now makes up a fifth of Dell's sales.
The move away from netbooks appears to be limited to the consumer end, as the Latitude netbook remains available. We've asked Dell whether the Latitude would follow suit, but have yet to hear back.
