Dell apologises for misleading graphics card advice

Backs down from inaccurate images on website.

Dell has apologised for misleading customers in the UK after PC Pro highlighted a Help page on the company's website that exaggerated the benefits of a high-end graphics card.

The Dell website showed two identical monitors, the one on the left allegedly using a "standard graphics card" and the other a "high-end graphics card".

The monitor with the lesser graphics chip showed a blurry, washed-out image of the Windows desktop, with the more expensive card delivering a sharper, more vivid picture.

As PC Pro stated in a blog post earlier this week, an improved graphics card would have little or no effect on the standard Windows desktop, with the difference only really being apparent in 3D games and applications.

In a statement sent to PC Pro, Dell apologised and said it would be removing the offending images.

"Thank you for bringing this to our attention," a spokesperson for Dell said. "Dell endeavours to help customers to make the best decisions regarding their purchases. It was never our intention to mislead customers, and we apologise for any confusion caused. We have now removed the image from our Global sites. Dell remains committed to delivering the best possible experience to all our customers.”

Why are so many BIG companies taking the attitude that 'conning' customers is OK UNTIL you get caught. All you have to do is apologise. What happened to corporate honesty?

There is a lovely Yiddish expression for this; "Chin Music".

When the original chin music, is caught out, the corporation has fall back chin music with the standard glib meaningless promises and assertions.

PR just hits an F-Key to print/email them out.

The CEOs nowadays lie to their employees, their shareholders and most of all to themselves. Why should the customer miss out?

Unfortunately this isn't anything new from DELL or most of the majors.

For example, I remember years ago that DELL were offering a "boost in performance" by selecting 4GB of RAM when configuring a PC without offering a 64bit OS to go with it.
