The HP TouchPad will happily testify that the tablet jungle is a harsh environment and RIM’s PlayBook looks set to be the latest victim in the unforgiving tech food chain.
Having sold just 200,000 PlayBooks since the product launched, Research in Motion has planned a big campaign to clear out its costly inventory, it confirmed Thursday.
Rumours of a price cut for the company’s first tablet offering have begun circling the interwebs like a pack of scavenging vultures, no doubt fuelled by the disappointing statistic above.
Making matters worse, RIM had “made a strategic investment in high-value components related to PlayBook that were in tight supply at the time of the commitment,” according to a Seeking Alpha transcript of chief financial officer Brian Bidulka's comments.
No official confirmations have seeped through as yet, although WSJ reports that CEO Mike Lazardis has stated that promotions, incentives and rebates will be available this autumn.
RIM has already commenced a PlayBook sale in its home territory, according to the Boy Geneius Report, with Canadian wireless carrier Rogers reportedly selling the 16GB PlayBook, normally $499 in Canada ($549 in Australia), for just $249. (This deal was only available to Rogers' staff at present.).
Only time will tell if that translates to massive price cut, so stay tuned for more info as and when we get it.
