Android to dominate by 2016

Android to dominate by 2016

Google's Android will be far and away the most widely used OS on smartphones by 2016, a report claims.

Android will hold 45 per cent of the smartphone market by 2016 as the Google OS looks set to become even more popular, an analyst report has claimed.

ABI Research predicted Apple’s iOS would only see moderate growth over the mid-term to hold 19 per cent market share.

Figures from IDC recently showed shipments of Android phones grew by more than 1,500 per cent in just one year.

“Android, Bada and BlackBerry have a great opportunity to fill the vacuum being left by the disappearance of the Symbian OS within the next two years,” said ABI Research senior analyst Michael Morgan.

Samsung’s Bada has seen particularly impressive growth in its brief life and could even hit 10 per cent market share by 2016, Morgan said.

RIM will continue to perform well, having achieved 15 per cent market share in 2010, to hold 14 per cent in five years time, according to the analyst firm.

But Windows Phone 7 may find it difficult to gain a hold on the market, Morgan said.

“Windows Phone 7, on the other hand, which shipped in two million handsets in Q4 2010, will have to find incredible success through its Nokia channel to take more than seven per cent of the market by 2016,” he said.

The report also showed 302 million smartphones were shipped in 2010, representing a significant 71 per cent growth over 2009’s shipment levels.

“The overall smartphone market growth for 2010 is not really so surprising: what is more significant is the 19 per cent compound annual growth rate (CAGR) contained in our forecasts through 2016,” added ABI Research vice president Kevin Burden.

2016? Android will probably have hald the entire phone market by then, let alone the smartphone market.
+++
Once graphene or carbon nanotubes become a commercial reality, their much lower cost will drive touch sentive prices so low, that switches will be more expensive to make and fit to any device not just phones.
+++
Given that these technologies are well beyond the 'drawing board' stage, can anyone see feature phones being around when they cost more to make than touch screen-driven devices?

I'm sorry @petergaskin.
I'm an oldie, rapidly approaching the magic 60 and I love my touch screen phone. Admittedly it's not made by Apple or their slave masters, Foxconn, so I can use it with a clear conscience.
Oh, and by the way, was it you back in the 70's that said that fuel injection and electronics in cars would never work?
Bring on technology. It doesn't frighten me!!

i suppose Peter you would rather 20c (that's what it used to cost in your day) to use a phone box to call someone /tongueincheek

The thing I really don't get is... "Android to dominate" gets reported like that's a great thing, as if people are being saved or something. And yet a similar projection about Apple would either be downplayed or spun as if it's a negative. I mean make up your mind...

@pulse - I use several touch scrteen computers at work. thsu my dislike for them!
As for problems with computers in cars - just ask many owners of camira 1.8 and various magna models.
They just love it when their car stops working for no reason at all. They just have to wait 10 minutes and then it all works!
I ams ure soem oldies may liek a touch screen phoen. I will stick to my simple samsung mobile phone. Dont wnat to go back to the bad old days of having to look for a phone box!
I remember when I was involved in trying to justify the change from Telex to fax.
I do move with the times - but not touch screens. Had too many problems with screens. What happens when the monitor breaks? Tiem for a new computer?

How can android make inroads to the corporate and school market if they DO NOT support wifi proxy. Most of corporate and schools use a proxy server. It is the one thing that I really don't understand why it is not enabled. Every other smart phone does wifi proxy.
