Tech deals: Logitech cashback items, now on sale at Dick Smith

It's not every day you see a 100% cashback offer, even if it is for keyboards and mice. If you haven't already plonked down full price, you might be interested to know the same products can be found onsale the next day.

That was quick. Forums are already filling with more than a few disappointed comments after Logitech's cashback offer on certain items - including this $49.95 wireless keyboard and mouse combo - expired less than a day after it began.

Logitech announced this week that customers would be able to lodge a claim to get all their money back on certain items, including keyboards, mice and webcams. The promo was to run from February 1 to 28th, or when the $300,000 budget for the promotion expired.

While it's disappointing to miss out, the fact that the promotion ended so quickly opens up customers to the possibility of buying a product before realising that the promotion has ended. A Harvey Norman store we checked with said it would offer an exchange or store credit, but not a refund. At the OzBargain site some people claim to have been able to return Logitech products to other retailers for a refund without issue.

Since the promotion ended, Dick Smith has marked down the price of all the Logitech products that were eligible for the cashback offer (the Logitech Media Keyboard K200 is actually a little cheaper at $9.98, instead of the original price quoted of $29.95 quoted by Logitech). Which is good news if you're still after a bargain, though could be a little annoying if you've already put full price down elsewhere.

Excellent news. I was going to buy a keyboard and mouse yesterday afternoon but the promotion ended before I even got to go on my lunch break!

Yesterday I bought some items based on the promotion and will be returning them to the store, let Dick Smith (the stores) deal with the fallout.
Also interesting was the general unavailability of some items.
The funky C210 webcam and Wireless Desktop MK260 are nowhere to be seen.
I tried Dick Smith, 3 X Officeworks stores, 2 X JB HiFi stores, CPL (Melbourne) by phone, Standard Computers (Altona) by phone and another supplier to our business.
Dick Smith have it (C210) on their web site but it was out of stock everywhere, the others did not even stock them or even have it available to even order.
Call me a cynic but I reckon it was a $300k marketing ploy to promote the brand.
Only this ploy may come back to bite them badly.
As a side issue I have many Logitech accessories from keyboards, mice to a Harmony remote and have up until now been happy with Logitech.
Now I'm “Not happy Jan”

This promo is a PR Stunt!!

Day ONE 1 Feb 3.15 PM: (first Noted @2.30ish)The site claims that $30,000 has already been claimed! I believe this but I also believe in the Tooth Fairy. If any one has the energy please chase-up their NSW Permit No.LTPS/10/12639; SA Permit No. T10/3093. This promo could appear to be dishonest or is it a game of chance? (Gambling)
If people acted on an embargoed Press Release to scoop up $30,000 worth of gear , could this be insider trading?

The NSW regulatory body needs to follow up and check that the claims were actually processed to real people and also how many claims will be knocked back by Logitech purporting claims to be invalid? (Slippage) This slippage is how this farce works.
In many countries this kind of marketing is illegal
To promote a product you must have it available.

Unless monkeys are running Logitech, their PR people must be able to judge the effect of such a 100% refund PR Stunt. Most PR people would have studied the infamous Hoover free flights promotion
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hoover_free_flights_promotion

PR 101 study:

The infamous Hoover free flights promotion
This is from Promo Magazine(thanks).

How the farce works,
The vacuums cost half the price of the airfare. Hoover had gambled that this promotion would pay out for three reasons:

1-Consumers would buy, but FAIL to take advantage of the offer because of the RED TAPE involved in redemption. This is known as slippage

2-Sales reps would successfully upsell consumers more expensive models.

3-Travel agency reps would sell additional travel insurance to those HARDY SOULS who actually tried to redeem their free-ticket offers.

Consumers are much, much smarter than they're generally given credit for. Knowing a bargain when they saw one, British consumers began snapping up Hoover vacuums at a dizzying pace. Sales exploded. Hoover's flagship Scottish plant ]was left working all-out to meet soaring demand.
Hoover management upped the ante with a follow-up promotion that offered two free return tickets from the U.S. TV ads for this campaign reminded holders of the first offer, and trumpeted the new offer under the tag “Two Return Seats: Unbelievable.”

Unbelievable” doesn't even begin to describe what happened next.

Slippage is inversely tied to offer value — the higher the value, the lower the slippage,
The slippage factor on a $1 detergent rebate is huge because it's only $1.
Slippage on a $100 computer accessory rebate is minimal, because it's a tremendously high value. Who's going to forget someone owes them $100? The fiasco had cost Hoover £50 million, the British division of Hoover was sold to the Italian manufacturer Candy.

I urge All to contact their favorite News Agency to out this type of activity
this will hopefully change legislation

I take it you didn't read the response in my last thread, Sid Spart?

And why should we believe you instead Cyb3rGlitch? Do you have evidence that this was not a scam? If we have to base this on feelings my feelings are that this was a scam!

Sid

I watched the counter, it went pretty quick. The promo had a site up for several days prior and i found it on overclockers.com.au among other places prior to it commencing. I got in and bought $100 worth of gear, you can buy up to 5 bits of gear per household. I have 14 days to send in the redemption form which is more than reasonable along with the original receipt.

Take $100 as a reasonable number per customer (web cam + headset + keyboard combo), $300,000 is only 30k customers.... not a lot so completely understandable it went in under 24 hours.

Thanks Firewuff.. I hope your claim is not knocked back by Logitech because you fail odious compliance hoops. It would be good to hear from others who got through.

Logitech have put a nail in the coffin for bizarre capped offers.
For hypothetical example how can you have a so called FREE Blue-ray offer for a $3000 Sony TV which could have reached its cap whilst you were taking your TV home.? That would be taking a chance. So these offers are misleading.
If they are capped they are A GAME OF CHANCE, NOT A FREE OFFER OR CASHBACK.

Unfortunately there is probably another $30,000 worth of unwanted keyboards that people bought in the first hours of the dodge for which now they cannot now make a claim.

The 50/50 chance is that there could be an explanation for this: which is:insert idea here..........
They have succeeded in damaging their brand.

Pity the poor DSE employees having to explain to every customer for a month that this offer is a dud.
Dick Smith has a half page spread on this game of chance in their Feb flier. The bright side of this is that they will have people wasting their time making unnecessary trips to the store who may make an impulse purchase(MBA claptrap:-)

According to DSE the offer was closed at 10 AM on the 1st day of the game they opened at 9AM.

firewuff - that should be 3000 cuistomers at $100 = $300,000. I thought about buying a wireless keyboard /mouse. Ran out of time. And now the decision has been made up for me!
Not the first promotion that I have missed out on - and it will not be the last!

Nathan_Never asked for proof it wasn't a scam. I read the announcement at 8.00am, was in Harvey Norman at 9.00am, after checking the Logica Site. I bought 2 MK250 outfits (I didn't need 5 items like some of the other people at the store) By 9.45 I was on to the registration site. I received a confirmation email from Logica not long afterwards, so it wasn't a scam as such. However I have no doubt it increased sales a fair bit. By the way, the Hardly Normal Staff I spoke to didn't know about the promotion & nowhere did it say I had to purchase them from Dick Smith
