Edimax claims its latest 802.11n wireless adapter is the smallest in the world, and we find no reason to disagree. Once you’ve plugged it into a spare USB socket, the body of the EW-7811Un sticks out less than a centimetre. There isn’t much room for an antenna inside that tiny case, however, and performance is disappointing. In our close-range test against the slightly larger D-Link DWA-131 it proved sluggish, with an average transfer rate of 34.5Mbits/sec. That’s 39% slower than the D-Link, and its range wasn’t good, either. At 40m (through two walls) it failed to see our test network; we had to move past one of the walls to 30m before we could connect. Despite a reasonable price, then, we can’t recommend this as a replacement for your existing 802.11g adapter.
