Steam’s Summer Sale kicks off for 2012

Steam’s Summer Sale kicks off for 2012

Christmas arrives early for PC gamers, as Valve's annual sale finally begins.

For those into PC games the annual Steam Summer Sale is both a blessing and a curse. A blessing because it is the best chance to pick up those games you’ve missed out on at a great price, a curse because it is an easy way to ensure you’ll be subsisting on toast for the rest of the month after buying all those games.

After a delay from the traditional kickoff around the 4th of July holiday in the US, this year’s sale has now swung into action – and there are already some pretty sweet deals going.

For those who haven’t experienced Steam sales before, they run as follows. Pretty much everything on the store is marked down by some degree, with even further discounts every day on a selection of games. There are also various game packs available, some offering massive numbers of games for a very reasonable price.

These deals aren’t just on old, crappy games either – today’s deals include Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, Portal 2, Total War Shogun 2 and Heroes of Might and Magic IV, all massively popular titles.

With this year’s sale Valve has also added a bunch of shorter deals as well. The store’s frontpage has a section with four games offered as ‘Flash Deals’ with timers counting down – it appears these games rotate every few hours, an interesting incentive to have people checking the store more frequently. There is also a section for people to vote for one of three possible deals, the winner of which then goes on sale for eight hours while the poll for the next deal runs.

For those who are already running Steam, its just a case of logging in and refreshing the store page. If you don’t have Steam you can head on over to the website to check out the deals there.
