Apple partners with TomTom for iOS 6 Maps

It's official – the mapping data for Apple's iOS 6 comes from TomTom.

TomTom has confirmed that it's providing the global mapping data for iOS 6 – following Apple's decision to ditch Google Maps on the latest version of its mobile operating system.

Need to know - iOS 6's new features explained.

Apple's new Maps application – available on iOS 6 when it launches in August – will feature Siri integration, turn-by-turn navigation and live, crowdsourced traffic data.

A new Flyover feature features 3D models of cities with photographic textures – similar to Google's own 3D maps.

Although it's bad news for satnav manufacturers – well, except TomTom – it has yet to be confirmed whether iOS 6's Maps app will feature downloadable maps. After all, smartphone maps are only as good as your data connection.
