Telstra launches NBN services in Tasmania

Telstra's NBN network is now up and running in Tasmania's south.

The southern Tasmanian towns of Triabunna and Sorell are the latest communities to receive Telstra's commercial NBN service.

The newly completed fibre cable installations are capable of delivering 100Mbps network speeds to approximately 500 households in Triabunna and 3,606 residents in Sorell.

While speaking at the Telstra media launch, Jenifer Crawford, Acting Mayor of Glamorgan Spring Bay Council claimed that the NBN would open up "fabulous" opportunities for Tasmania's southern communities, especially "in the areas of business, healthcare and education.”

To help educate Tasmanian residents about its NBN commercial broadband services, Telstra has also rolled out its mobile "Store on Wheels" which will travel around the island over the coming months. Similar to NBN Co's NBN Co truck, the Store on Wheels will attempt to answer NBN-related questions.

"As the NBN launch State and the first State where the NBN will be rolled out in its entirety, we expect there to be a lot of interest, and customers will have a lot of questions," Telstra explained on its official blog.

In addition to educating the NBN curious, the mobile unit is also a fully fledged Telstra store that will supplement the company's brick-and-mortar shops in Tasmania. The Store on Wheels will be permanently based in Tasmania and will be progressively rolled right into the heart of NBN enabled areas where the company lacks a retail presence.

At the time of writing, the Store on Wheels was operating in the town of Triabunna, where it will remain for the next fortnight.

Telstra NBN plans currently start at $80 per month for 5GB of data at 25Mbps, or $100 for the faster 100Mbps service with 200GB. You can find more information here.
