Computex 2012: Gigabyte shows off the world's lightest Ultrabook

The first day of Computex has been a fruitful one: we've visited Gigabyte to take a look at their new Ultrabook. It's compact, it's powerful, and best of all, it's coming to Australia.

There has been an Ultrabook race in the IT industry for the last nine months, and Gigabyte has finally joined the party. The plan was to build the worlds lightest and most portable Ultrabook, and it appears Gigabyte has acheived that goal with the X11.

In order to keep weight down, Gigabyte has constructed the entire chasis from carbon fibre. Then added aluminum supports and screen hinges - which also act as heatsinks for the device - helping to reduce weight even further.

As you can see from the attached images, the X11 weighs in at a mere 972g, far lighter than most other 11.6" ultrabooks on the market. in fact, it's lighter than a lot of tablets too. The laptop is customisable and will be available with Core i3, i5 or i7 processors upon order. Prices are estimated to range from $899 to $1299 (USD) as the MSRRP.

Unfortunately the X11 was attached to an alarm system (which we actually triggered), so this sample can't find it's way into our labs. We will however have a full review up for your reading pleasure as soon as stock finds its way to Australian shores.
