Are we right in thinking that Linux holds something of an allure of mystery for the non-initiated?
The strengths of Linux are well known, from the advantages of the open source software paradigm, collaborative development, the level of control and customisation…the list goes on.
Is that it though? Or is does the motivation to get involved go beyond this?
Take this new Linux Tycoon "game". It's a game where you make Linux. There's a certain element of tongue-in-cheek humour to be found in the screenshots - like the "hype" ratings. Makes you wonder though.

We were willing to put this down to April fools, but there appears to be a functioning forum for the game filling with suggestions and positive feedback.
Interestingly, according to this story, about 75% of contributors to the Linux kernel are professional software developers who get money for doing it from their employers. Something to keep in mind if you're considering programming as a career.
