The NBN wasn't our only broadband future

The NBN wasn't our only broadband future

Meet the strange and futuristic world of broadband – 1992 style

In the wake of the recent run of NBN roll outs across Sydney suburbs – and the ensuing controversy that any mention of the NBN ultimately brings – we thought it might be a good time to step back and remember the promises of the broadband future from the dim dark ages of 1992.

Twenty years ago, Telecom Australia (it was still one year away from becoming Telstra) released a promotional video showing the wonderful world Broadband. The video is set four years in the future – the technologically advanced time of 1996 – deals with how one man used the power of broadband to... well, we won’t spoil it for you.

This was found thanks to the excellent work of Matt Novak (@PaleofutureBlog) and his stellar blog Paleofuture. Novak writes about “the history of the future”, as he puts it, and retro tech fans will find a lot to love.

We’ve embedded the videos from Daily Motion ourselves, but we encourage you to have a look at the original post on Paleofuture and to spend a bit of time looking through the blogs archives. Otherwise, enjoy this look at the future of the Australian internet:

As an ex-Telecom Aust employee, I always thought Telstra should shell out for better actors in their advertising. But hey, the people they used weren't *too* bad, just a little stilted, and they probably had a great time doing it.

Interesting how in the 1990s vision of the future there weren't any cameras, video just magically appears at the other end.
Love the fashions too, especially the hair-dos. :-)

I believe Telstra is still struggling hard to make that our future complete with the fashions.
