Huawei Ascend D quad – overview
The Huawei Ascend D quad's 8.9mm body might not be the thinnest we've seen here in Barcelona, but it shouldn't cause any trouble for most pockets and is understandable given its generous 1,800mAh battery. It'll certainly look skinny when compared to its 10.9mm thick Ascend D quad XL brother, which packs in a hefty 2,500mAh battery.
Huawei Ascend D quad – build and design
The Huawei Ascend D quad won't win any design awards with its no-nonsense plain black styling at the front, but we did like the faint diagonal stripes on the rear and the red camera lens accent. Although it doesn't have a premium weighty feel to it, the Huawei Ascend D quad doesn't feel like a cheap device in the hand. It definitely doesn't give off the premium vibe of a handset like the HTC One X however.
Huawei Ascend D quad – screen
The Huawei Ascend D quad's 4.5in 1280x720 HD IPS+ LCD screen is very pleasant on the eyes thanks to its large size, sharpness and brightness, and does a great job of making Ice Cream Sandwich's animations, games and pictures pop.
Huawei Ascend D quad – performance
The 1.5Ghz quad-core Tegra 3 processor residing within the Huawei Ascend D quad's shell blitzed through 3D games and the stock Ice Cream Sandwich OS's transitions with ease, and there was no lag or stuttering to be seen. Hardly a surprise given the strength of the silicon, but comforting to see nonetheless.
Huawei Ascend D quad – camera
We found Huawei's custom camera app fired up quickly and took shots in quick session without any fuss. Images were good thanks to the Huawei Ascend D quad's 8MP sensor, and the dual LED flash performed admirably among the Huawei booth's dim lighting.
Huawei Ascend D quad – first impressions
It might not be the sexiest phone that we've caressed here in Barcelona but the Huawei Ascend D quad plays it safe with a simple design, and lets it's innards and spec sheet do all the talking. If it launches with a lower price than its other quad core competitors then it looks set to offer heaps of bang for your hard-earned bucks.
