Is Sony ditching Android for Vita OS smartphones and tabs?

Could Sony be on the verge of giving Android the cold shoulder in favour of its own Vita-based operating system?

First Sony ditches the Ericsson part of its name. Now speculation suggests Sony is considering leaving Android by the wayside in favour of its own tablet and smartphone OS, based on the Vita system for its new gaming handheld

According to the AV Watch new site, Sony is exploring ways to port its Vita OS software onto its range of smartphones and tablets.

Spotted by eagle-eyed web watchers over at The Verge, the Japanese site claims that the soon-to-be Sony President and CEO, Kazuo Hirai, has let the cat out of the bag in a Q&A session hinting that the Vita OS is not just a gaming platform and that Sony is exploring how it could take its Vita OS onto other portable platforms.

Sony's Senior Vice President Yoshio Matsumoto further bolstered the speculation by saying that "it is possible" to expand the Vita OS to apply to smartphones and tablets.

Having already started a smartphone gaming revolution with the Xperia Play (complete with PlayStation One titles), it wouldn't be too far-fetched an idea for Sony to develop its gaming-based OS for its other portable machines.

Seeing as Sony is looking to make its mark on the smartphone market with its new line of Sony-branded smartphones, Vita gaming on future smartphones and tablets sounds like it could give Sony the competitive edge it needs for its smartphones and tablets to survive.

It goes without saying a smartphone or slate with the Vita's display quality and gaming experience would be a truly remarkable thing  and probably the death of the PS Vita.

We look forward to hearing the develpments on this and as ever will keep you updated as soon as we hear more.

With commentators claiming that Googarola is already showing signs of giving preference to it's own phones/tablets and Sony previously relegated to back in the pack as opposed to Samsung's 'special' relationship with Google, it could make great sense for Sony to go out on it's own, leverage their gaming lead....
