CES 2012: 10 big things we might or might not see

With one of the world's biggest tech shows about to begin, arm yourself with this 30-second breakdown of the big rumours.

It’s always hard to guess what the Consumer Electronics Show will reveal in Las Vegas, but here are some of the best guesses and rumours:

1 Ultrabook frenzy

Could up to 50 new Ultrabooks be launched this year? The rumour mill suggests that Intel’s new baby is one to watch

2 Tegra 3 Tablets

The Transformer Prime might already be here but the safe bet is that it won’t be alone for long

3 Quad-core Smartphones

The gap between tablet and smartphone has shrunk (for screen size) and a new crop like the HTC Edge could shrink it even further

4 Glassless 3D TV

We’ve seen a few models, but 2012 could be a big year for 3D TV people can enjoy without looking like Buddy Holly

5 Xbox 720/Kinect 2

Although MS has tried to scuttle this one, the hint of the next generation of Xbox has definitely got gamers’ imaginations churning

6 Nokia’s Windows 8 Tablet

Nokia is well aboard the Microsoft train now, but can the Finns really be planning to make a jump from phone to tablet?

7 An Intel powered phone

We’re not holding our breath on this one, but we concede that it’s possible Intel could choose 2012 to push into handsets

8 AMD “thin ’n’ light”

They can’t use the term Ultrabook, but could AMD stage an attack on the luxury laptop market?

9 Consumer 3D scanner

Rumours suggest Samsung might be showing off a commercially available scanning device that renders 3D…

10 Mass Market 3D Printing

MakerBot’s Thing-o-Matic is superb, but 2012 might well be the year that home manufacturing takes off for the average punter.
