Select models of first-generation iPod nanos will be eligible for a free replacement from Apple due to an overheating glitch.

“Apple has determined that, in very rare cases, the battery in the iPod nano (1st generation) may overheat and pose a safety risk," the company states
on its website. "...This issue has been traced to a single battery supplier that produced batteries with a manufacturing defect. While the possibility of an incident is rare, the likelihood increases as the battery ages.”
The affected models were sold between September 2005 and December 2006 and can be checked via the product's serial number. If your nano qualifies, Apple will send out a free replacement; although you won't be getting a current-gen model, sadly. Instead, you'll be receiving another first generation model (hey, at least it will look new and shiny again).
You can order your replacement unit via Apple's online replacement program.
