1 terabyte TiVo XL lands in Australia

The latest TiVo sports a 1TB hard drive, which allows you to record nearly three times as much free-to-air TV content.

TiVo's ANZ distributor Hybrid Television Services has announced the launch of a limited-edition 1TB TiVo media device in Australia.

The TiVo XL has a recording capacity of 1TB; 680GB more than the current TiVo's 320GB. This is enough to store around 350 hours of SD video and 150 hours of HD video.

In addition to recording free-to-air TV, the TiVo XL retains its predecessor's IPTV CASPA service, which allows you to stream television, movies and video over your broadband connection.

"Recognising the increased free-to-air TV offering with the advent of digital TV – this new product provides significantly greater recording capacity to remain up-to-date with the vast variety of great TV across all of the Freeview channels," Hybrid Television Services explained in a statement.

Other than the increased capacity size, the new model appears to be identical to its predcessor. Meanwhile, American customers are being treated to an all-new TiVo (the Premiere Elite) which boasts significant improvements, including four TV tuners and double the storage space. It's also nearly $200 cheaper.

The TiVo XL will cost $699 and will be available exclusively from Harvey Norman, Domayne and Joyce Mayne retail outlets from 12 November 2011.

I have to say I hate that we are still so far behind. I mean I LOOOOVE my TiVo but when the US is getting such massive upgrades it would be nice to get them here in Aus also.

Oh and for the record, I have been running my TiVo with a 1TB HDD since I first got it... about 2 months after they came out in Aus originally. Couldn't live without it

WRT the American unit - read the fine print. It's designed for cable networks only, not free to air and there is a monthly charge on top of the initial cost.
Not such a great deal after all.
