Android facing struggle in sales battle with iPad

Android facing struggle in sales battle with iPad

Research claims Apple will still hold 75% market share in 2011.

Android tablet makers will struggle to supplant the Apple iPad’s leading position because of high prices and weak user interfaces, according to research firm Gartner.

The company’s figures say tablet sales are expected to total 63.6 million units this year, but despite a slew of tablets released from Android partners such as Samsung and major players such as RIM, Apple is on target to take three quarters of the market.

Gartner said the company’s multiple competitors would struggle for the foreseeable future, with Apple taking a 73.4% share this year, and still accounting for more than half the market by 2014.

“This is because Apple delivers a superior and unified user experience across its hardware, software and services,” said Carolina Milanesi, research vice president at Gartner.

“Unless competitors can respond with a similar approach, challenges to Apple’s position will be minimal. Apple had the foresight to create this market and in doing that planned for it as far as component supplies, such as memory and screen," she said.

“So far, Android’s appeal in the tablet market has been constrained by high prices, weak user interface and limited tablet applications.”

The company also predicted that despite a tablet focus in Windows 8, Microsoft would still feature on only 10% of tablets by 2015, claiming the “late arrival might limit its appeal, especially to consumers, as Apple and Android will be more entrenched by then”.

The research echoes similar figures from IDC released this week that gave Apple a 68% market share.

I doubt they'll ever supplant ipads.

At a biz conference recently, the speaker said "don't have satisfied customers, have raving fans, then you won't HAVE to compete on price.

Just read the fans on here - their loyalty in some cases disguised, but there nonetheless - the strategy works and patent stupidity aids in the process, though a few acquaintances have asked me about Samsung.

The patent litigation issues have apparently raised the products of a competitor in the consumer's mind (well in my tiny sample anyway)

Could it be that trying to do harm on flimsy pretexts seems would ASSIST the Android push?
We shall see.

You fail to see that your own prejudices on the supposed superiority of open source colors your perceptions.

Down to repeated assertions on products and technologies not yet launched and in some cases never appearing.

Don't know how good your memory is but I remember you avidly pre-announcing countless models of iPad killers based on vague or imagined superior specs. Each time I told you to wait till the products are out and do the comparison on contemporaneous shipping models, face to face. Where are all the killer products you promised?

Similarly you fail to recognise that there has been no Santa Clause to give you cheap iPad alternatives that are every bit as good as the iPad itself.

People are happy to pay more for Apple products not through some mass hypnosis but ultimately because of real experience. When they buy Apple they are most times satisfied with what they get, not always, but more so than with Apple's competitors. Apple's competitors do the opposite, either repeatedly disappointing (twice and you're out permanently), or making it so uncertain that your money won't be wasted, that people prefer to take the safe option and go Apple instead.

I was in advertising. Clients have the misapprehension that good campaigns will paper over the cracks of their service and products. A good campaign can make people want to try an unfamiliar product (something very hard to get people to do) but once they have tried it they make up their own minds. My boss repeatedly told clients (which they ignored) "We can get them in your door, but then it is up to you to keep them there, sell your product and satisfy them." Particularly don't piss people off.

Apple works very hard at all levels to please and satisfy its customers. You can point out where they occasionally drop the ball, but they still manage to better their competitors by a wide margin in all measures of satisfaction.

Yet another brainwashed Apple raving fan, Google Chairman Eric Schmidt.

"Where's the Android, love? Where's the Google Chrome?"

Photo,

Your arguments don't come close to holding water!

'Have raving fans and you don't need to compete on price'.

Point 1. - Ipad2 is competitively priced against all supposed challengers to date.
Point 2. - MacBook Air is so well priced that Ultrabooks mfrs are having to ask Intel for a special discount to compete.
Point 3. - iMac is better priced and better spec'd than any of the woefully underperforming alternatives.

I could go on, but get the point???

Then there's your suggestion that anyone who takes exception to your endles 'Apple is Evil, Android wonderful' bleating must be a secret Apple Fan (fanatic). Perhaps with some, but others, just prefer to see a more factually balanced discussion, instead of the endless hate Apple drivel..

200+ Million (? I don't know what the total Apple ownership is) 'raving Apple fans' with the highest customer satisfaction ratings for the 8th straight year, the highest customer retention of any brand... - sounds more than just raving fanatics...

That's the greatest number of brainwashed raving fans in history of mankind... Either Apple has some secret brainwashing technique or is it just possible they manage to make a product that does what it's owners want...?

I'd suggest, yes the press reports have raised public awareness that something is happening, however, the greatest negative impact upon Apple (in your tiny sample) might be as a result of your uninformed and one sided rant about how evil Apple is to defend what they see as their IP, as defined under current patent law.

One would hope that sufficient intelligence exists for them to check the other side of the story and the relative merits of the product rather than blindly follow, which might well benefit Apple despite your best efforts.

On the other hand, perhaps they also are members of your Flat Earth Society, in which case they were lost to Apple already.

Evil? Whose words are those? My best efforts? Flat earth society? Personal remarks are a sure sign of what? Incisive logic and all the factoids on ones side? I doubt it...

Photo, your posts have been consistently anti-Apple, charging that they restrict competition, you name it. 'Trying to do harm on flimsy pretexts'... That sounds like suggesting evil to me.

Regardless of any posts that clearly refute your views held against all fact, you never change, sounds like Flat Earth Society, to me.

Your best efforts - can you seriously suggest that if someone came to you and asked your recommendation on a phone or tablet, you would ever recommend Apple? Admit it, your best efforts would be to get another Android convert...

Photo thinks he can make reality bend to his will.

Then the spill on effect will be the world will be open source with free software and below cost hardware, just so he can have things a bit cheaper.

He really reminds of this Lebanese guy who got me to draw up his house plans, changed his mind 9 times then wanted to pay me half what we had agreed, offering to supply the paper the plans were on. Told him to stick it up his arse. Clueless bastard.

After all there is nothing to design, it is the paper and ink manufacturers who do the real work.

Restrictive, anti-competitive behaviour. I see it and call it, not worship it, no matter WHO is doing it.

AM for the record, I have often recommended a Mac for people who I thought it would benefit. I just don't make it a religion.

Nice story, Ruby - not applicable to me. I'm not a zealot,I just call them where I see worship rather than logic.

I like freedom as in 'free speech', not as you and ruby apparently interpret it 'free drinks'.
The value of openness is apparent to some and not others.

If you don't see it, that's your call.

The new Amazon tablet looks pretty good, BTW - with much content you have to PAY FOR.
I'm fine with paying (and always have been) as long as there's value to me, regardless of some of the puerile slurs here.

That's just it,

Many see Apple defending their patents as their right and not non-competitive.

I hadn't looked at it beyond the obvious cosmetic sameness, including icon shape and colour.

For the first time today, I say the full extent of it.

Beyond the above, the packaging, including graphics, the power adapter, the cable and connectors. If I were the iPad designer, I'd be saying WTF.

I certainly don't worship any manufacturer. At present, on balance of evidence, I'd be saying Google are the more flawed with stolen code, refusal to licence software.

Samsung similar for attempting to get higher licence fees from Apple for FRAND patents. Samsung staff deliberately leaking confidential Apple information prior to the release of the iPad.

As usual the Android fans, throw crap at Apple while conveniently ignoring the excesses of their favoured gaggle of Android cohorts.

Free speach is fine, however when it is consistently at error, others have the freedom to call it. Don't have a clue where the 'free drinks'came from, unless you're referring to Googles attempts to steal Java code.

Free drinks is what many nongs think of when someone advocates that some software should be free.
The freedom is more about being able to change, contribute, improve.
Closed source prevents that, some can't see that's bad.
Different story for very small-selling apps, impossible to bake a living selling it for a 'reasonable' price. /rant

I have nothing against open source, I use quite a bit of it and appreciate the efforts of those who produce it.

But and this is a big BUT, I am very aware of its limitations. Limitations that show painfully in real life. The lack of clear focus, of leading minds taking the projects to new horizons. The poor support by those who have no interest in the users because the users do not contribute except in passing.

And I really question the wannabes who claim to do all sorts of things with open source, but just can't really show anything.

Like my mate. Boufht a (very new to market) focussing mech for his telescope.
ONE email and the programmer asks for the details of this new mech.

3 days and there's a new executabel, approved by said friend as it worked perfectly.

7 days made it into the linux distros we use (DIFFERENT distros)

Great for a very specific requirement, however for the other 99.9% of the population, one source has little benefit.

I know you can get an open source Office equiv, and one of our draft uses it, however, I've tried Open Office since V1 and always found it to be useable, a buy clunky and not finished off. I find same with most Open source.

That said, I use VLC and a number of other open source utilities, just because they work.
