Kogan unveils "world's first" Chromium OS laptop

Kogan has announced a new Agora laptop powered by Chromium OS; available from today for $349.

Kogan Technologies today announced the availability of the Kogan Agora Laptop powered by Chromium OS; a 11.6in ultraportable notebook that runs on Google's open-source Chromium platform.

The new Agora laptop's main claim to fame is its Chromium operating system, which Kogan claims is the first in the world.

"We've been able to beat the rest of the world to bring the first commercially available laptop running Google’s Chromium OS," Kogan Technologies' CEO Ruslan Kogan said in a statement

Chromium is a browser-based operating system built by Google that attempts to bring the OS template to the cloud. It requires an internet connection at all times, which makes Wi-Fi essential.

Some advantages of the Chromium OS include fast operating speeds, increased backup security, easy access to personal data across multiple computers and integration with Android based devices. Being open-source, it's also free to upgrade.

"While Chromium is still in its early stages, we know the operating system is innovative technology which represents the future of computing," said Kogan. "It may take some getting used to for some to operate entirely in the cloud, but the massive benefits for the end user are driving acceptance of entirely web-based services."

Google's vision of an always-connected device is certainly compelling, but the reality of Wi-Fi blackspots is sure to lead to frustration - especially with no 3G onboard. (To get the most out of the unit, you're going to need a smartphone capable of turning into a personal Wi-Fi hotspot.)

The Kogan Agora Laptop powered by Chromium OS comes with a 1.3GHz  Intel Celeron CPU, 1GB RAM and an integrated Intel GS40 graphics card. Storage is limited to a 30GB Solid State Drive, with the majority of applications stored in the cloud.

Another not so hot product from Kogan.

Is he really the first to release?

A cloud based computer should be around half the thickness of what appears to be just another 2-3 generation old Chinese notebook with pretty poor specs.

I'd dispute his comments about cloud computing being the way of the future. Unless we're all on fibre internet connection, can he seriously think we're going to sit around all day waiting for data to move around like treacle.

For all Kogan's usual hype, I think he's released another cheap dog.

I'm not convinced. Always connected devices in Australia? Really? Jeez, I have to drive three kilometres from home just to get a minimal G3 connection.

I think Chromium will a have a big future. not sure about the Kogan version - but it is very cheap - similar in price to a netbook. So I can see kogan selling lots.
Would like to wait for what others start to bring out with Chromium.
The big question is - wil it kill off the netbook?
I do love the google search engine - google is my friend. i think with google backing, Chromium will be heavily sold as the device of the future - and it will succeed.

You hit it on the head. Similar in price to a netbook for less features really.

The basic computer he's stuffing this into is a 2005/2006 vintage in specs, very cheap build quality by the looks and sound of it with a 30gb SSD being the only differentiator.

Yes, I'm sure many will be seduced by Kogan's hype and the cheap price, however if they though about it, they would better buying a real, 2009/2010 notebook from Harvey's/Joyce etc for only another $100-200.

This is not a laptop, it's a low spec netbook! It should not be promoted as a laptop or notebook

With its 11.6" screen, it is too big to be classed as a netbook. in reality, it is being positioned in a new market.
It in theory is the future for most laptops - according to Google. The end of Windows - in any format. So will we see the next amjor change in pc oses - dos - windows - chromium.

I'm not a cloud of any brand fan, however the iCloud announcement looks to have some potentially interesting features with ability to edit a doc on a PC and sutomatic sych to an iPad, could see some uses for travelling sales staff etc.

Still have the issue with data being out of our direct control and our internal security.

Because I choose to tell it as I see it.

He's great at marketing, selling 1-2 gen old products from what I can see with claims they are the latest and greatest. (some unkindly might say 'cheap Chinese Sh.t'

I have no issue with him being in business and people buying off him, as long as they are aware of the facts.

Cloud is currently so much hype and little delivery, and the notebook he's chosen to sell looks like 2006 or thereabouts standard. if custmers are happy with the hype and old gear, more power to them, though I suspect most will be sorely disappointed.

And apparently Mr Kogan is quite a brilliant global warming skeptic as well according to his performance on Q&A!
