Bus, train, ferry: what if free Internet was everywhere?

Bus, train, ferry: what if free Internet was everywhere?

It's not, but in the run-up to the state election the NSW government is pushing the promise of free WiFi on your way to work..

Free WiFi is the tech travelers' mirage. And even when you have a data plan, it's always handy to know you're not paying for your emails and downloads.

If you're the type that spends their morning commute glued to your favourite web site, then you might be interested to know that the NSW government is reportedly promising free WiFi on Sydney buses and trains.

A WiFi rollouot was announced for Brisbane suburban trains last year, but this is the first time anything similar has been promised for Sydney trains. Trials have previously been conducted at Circular Quay station, and on certain Sydney bus routes.

WiFi has already been announced for ferry users in Sydney. Customers can login twice per day and there's a limit of 30 minutes or 30MB per session.

Is free WiFi relevant anymore, when more and more people have mobile broadband on their laptop, phone or tablet? Add your opinion below.

Sure if you are on limited data plan free WiFi is useful. If it is faster than your average 3G modem then it is also a bonus.

Although the 30Mb per session will certainly limit what you can achieve...

I wouldn't use public WiFi because of the security issues, free or not. It's too easy to forget and be exposing yourself to snoops.

yep as allways 10 years behind the times. Most european trains have had this for many years. The pollies make out that they invented these things. By the next election after this we might get a proper fast integrated public transport system as well !!!!!!
